What altinha is, how to play, the rules, the gear, and how to find a roda near you — the questions we hear most, answered.
Altinha is a cooperative sport, game, and lifestyle. It's played with a ball by minimum of two people. The goal is to keep the ball in the air. At the beginning played mostly at the beach, but now altinha can be found also on the streets and parks, all over the world.
Altinha.com is the meeting point for the global altinha community. It brings together three things in one place: a directory to find where to play (verified spots, schools, and coaches near you) and coverage of the sport through news, events, and live streams, with a shop for altinha-inspired apparel and gear coming soon. In short: Connect. Watch. Wear.

There's no fixed number - technically, all you need is 2 people to start. The circle of 4 players is ideal for keeping a good flow and the perfect dynamic. For competitions, 4 players per team is required, with at least one woman on the team. That's the beauty of the game: it's all about inviting people in, uniting the group, and never excluding anyone.
In a regular game, there are not many rules. You can touch the ball with any part of your body, but NO HANDS are allowed.
The rules can vary depending on the place of the competition - beach or street.
NO! Using your hands or arms is the one hard rule in altinha. The whole idea of the game is to keep the ball up in the air using any other part of your body: feet, knees, chest, shoulders, head and even your hip or bum. This restriction is exactly what makes altinha so creative and fun to watch, since players have to get inventive with their touches, tricks, and reflexes to keep the ball from hitting the ground.
At its heart, altinha is casual and cooperative - it's about playing with each other, not against each other. There are no fixed teams, no winners, and no losers in a typical circle; the shared goal is simply to keep the ball up as long as possible through creativity, teamwork, and good energy. However, altinha does have a competitive side too - official tournaments exist, with structured rules and mixed-gender teams of 4. So whether you're looking for a laid-back game or a competitive match, altinha has room for both.
It depends on where you're playing. At the beach, altinha is typically played barefoot. In other surfaces, it's really up to you and your comfort; altinha played on the street is mostly played in shoes, since the ground calls for more protection.
Anything you feel comfortable moving in! There's no strict dress code for altinha. Although, it's not recommended to play with glasses or sunglasses (you use your head a lot during the game) and it's best to avoid sharp or long jewelry.
Not really - that's part of what makes altinha so accessible and beautiful. Unlike many sports that require nets, goals, cones, or specialized gear, altinha strips things down to the essentials: a ball and a group of people willing to play. You don't need a court, a field, or any kind of setup.
